New Job Opening at North

Recently James Hathaway, our Community Development Director announced that he and his wife Yulia are moving to Bergen, Norway to continue pursuing his education in the Masters program in Public Administration for Non-profit leadership at the University of Bergen. It is my understanding that this university provides a unique learning experience that was exactly what James was looking for as he furthers his education in this area of passion for them. This is a great opportunity for the Hathaways and we will miss them once they transition in August.

So, we are looking to fill this position. The job description is two parts.

1) It includes an emphasis on local community outreach. James was the area director of Unite, a non-denominational effort among churches to partner with government officials, schools and businesses to meet the needs of our local community (disclaimer: our church position doesn’t necessarily assume this parachurch leadership position, but we will remain involved in this effort). This involvement helped put Mt. Paran North folks into places of need to fulfill the Serving Others portion of our ministry vision. There were other local outreaches that help us take the Gospel outside the walls of our church, and we’ll want to continue those efforts while looking for even greater ways to serve our community.

2) This position oversees our Guest Services ministry. This includes managing a dedicated group of volunteers who serve in our parking lots, welcome areas, and within our sanctuary to help visitors and regular attenders have the best experience possible at North. They attempt to make people feel welcome and navigate what can be a sometimes confusing facility. This is an area that we have made great strides in recently and feel can be “beefed up” even more. This is a vital part of our Sunday and Wednesday experiences helping cut out the stress and distraction of getting in and getting settled so that people can worship and be presented the Gospel.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in this position, feel free to contact me at jeremy @ mtparan (dot) com or 678.285.3219. This is such an exciting time at North, and I believe God is up to big things. Maybe you’d like to be apart of that.

Worship & Arts Position

Our Worship & Fine Arts Pastor at Mt. Paran North, Randy Sheeks, recently announced after 4 years he would be leaving as of August 1 to move to Lee University to teach in and provide his expertise in the area of Church Music. We will miss Randy, Debbie, Elizabeth and Meredith terribly, but bless them as they take this next step in their God-journey.

With that being said we are now in the process of acquiring resumes from and having conversations with interested and worthy candidates to fill this position. I am a part of a team our Pastor, Mark Walker, has tasked with this part of the process. After some initial screening and phone interviews, our search team will pass along worthy candidates to Pastor Mark for consideration of an on-site interview in Marietta. Ultimately, as you would expect, he will make the invitation to join our team.

My reasons for posting are twofold:

1) I would love for you to reply in this thread and tell me who some of the “diamond in the rough” Music Pastors are. Who should we consider that we may not know about?

2) If you are interested in this position I would love the opportunity to talk to you about specifics of the job description as well as the process. The best way to do that is through jeremy@mtparan.com

I welcome your input!

Middle School Job Opening

I realize this isn’t a job board, but I thought I try to tap into our growing network.

I am in the process of acquiring resumes from people interested in our Middle School Pastor opening at Mt. Paran North in Marietta, GA. This is a full time position that reports to me as the Director of Student Ministries. The position will be filled by the first week of July at the conclusion of this year’s Middle School summer camp in Myrtle Beach, SC. At that time our current MS pastor will be leaving to launch a traveling preaching and worship ministry. If you or someone you know might have interest feel free to pass along my email address jeremy at mtparan dot com.

Thanks!

The Power of Team

Craig Groeschel posted today about Leading with a Team. He shared that “Most charismatic leaders can attract followers. It takes a humble leader to attract leaders.” He then shared 3 reasons why most pastors don’t build teams. You can read it HERE.

This post came at a perfect time for me. Last night Corrie and I spent several hours with Pastor Mark and Udella and our Executive Ministry Team and spouses. We had dinner, watched some football, laughed, and had a great time. If Craig’s post is correct and to see “the potential of a church or ministry, don’t look at the charismatic leader up front. Look at the team the leader has assembled.” then I am confident in the potential of our church. Not because any of us in that room are anything special, but our Pastor has assembled a great team. I’m proud to serve with them.

Along with that, I get to hang out with the team I lead tonight. At 7pm our High School leaders will come together. We are looking at structural and systemic changes within our HS ministry. I love this group of people, and always enjoy our time together. Our meeting tonight will be challenging, will stretch us, and hopefully set us on a more intentional path for the ministry we do here every week.

I’m so thankful for the teams I get to be a part of.

EMT Retreat

Our EMT (Executive Ministry Team) retreated 2+ days this past week to redefine, clarify, and hash out our vision and discipleship process. We left on Sunday afternoon and returned Tuesday night. We ate together, played together, and spent hours debating, dialoguing, and challenging the process.

Here are the things I came away with:

1- our Senior Pastor is a great leader. He can hear from God. He’s not afraid or selfish to let us chew on his ideas, change them, or even reject them.

2- our team is amazing. It is a privilege to serve with this group of people. Each of us is wired differently, but (I realize this is cheesy) like the body of Christ, we work well together for the ultimate goal.

3- we have a great church. Sure, we don’t do everything perfectly, and their are definitely areas of needed improvement, but…ultimately, it really is a great church.

4- I’m excited about the future. This was not a retreat of theories and unattainable ideas. We put the practical with it, and charted a course to improve the ministries of our church, and produce simpler more concise processes to do the work we feel God has called us to as a church. More to come on this later!

It was great to get away together. Now the challenge of coming home, and fleshing it out!

Staff Spotlight: Kim Victor

This is a new series of posts where I will highlight some of the incredible paid and volunteer staff that I get the pleasure of working with each week. This dedicated team of people make Student Ministry go at Mt. Paran North, and I thought it would be appropriate to acknowledge them here.

Kim Victor

When I came to Mt. Paran North in January ’07, I was blessed to have Kim Victor serving as the Administrative Assistant to my position. She continues to serve in that role with great efficiency and energy. Her role has been continually shifted and adjusted as we’ve made changes in personnel and job descriptions, but she has shown up everyday and done her job with excellence. She likes to get the job done, and get it done right the first time. Most mornings when I arrive she has the radio going, her water fountain running (it makes me have to go to the bathroom, I don’t know how she sits there all day), and is well on her way to completing her “To Do” list.

She is the mother of 2 great sons, a huge Ohio State Buckeye fan, and a tremendous asset to our team. Most days I wouldn’t know if I was coming or going without Kim’s help.

Thanks Kim for all you do for students at Mt. Paran North.
