Some of you may have seen the “on a boat” sketch from SNL with Adam Sandberg. It’s been around a while and contains some extreme language if viewed uncensored.
One of our leaders, Allon Sparks cleaned up the language and made it more applicable to our summer camp experience. He then recruited Billy Langley and me to fulfill what he described as a “bucket list” of recording a rap song. I played a very small part in all this. Props to Allon who wrote the lyrics and Billy who laid down all the tracks.
Last week I asked our worship band to cover the Justin Timberlake/T.I. song “Dead and Gone” in the middle of my message. Uber-talented Billy Langley created a track that mimicked the grammy performance a few weeks and then a group of college students and one of our leaders, Allon Sparks, did a great job. JJ is the one with the awesome task of singing the Timberlake melodies and Allon does his best T.I. impression. It was a great moment, and our students loved it!
Tomorrow night we are unpacking the word “worship”. As we’ve been preparing for the night I ran across this video. The girl singing is one of my favorites, and the song is _________ (literally no words to describe it).
We will close with this song tomorrow night. It’s definitely worth 4 minutes to watch this.
Our band did an incredible job at our Summer Camp leading our students and leaders in worship. You can read more about that HERE. They had a great mixture of songs we do on a weekly basis back home, some that we’ve done before, and some new music. When we returned home some of our students and leaders were looking for a way to keep that soundtrack going. So we created an iMix on iTunes of the camp playlist. While our students will still have to purchase the music through iTunes, this gives them a great place to start.
We are now talking about doing this on a regular basis as the Wednesday night song list expands and changes. Monthly may be too often, but we like the idea of making the songs we are doing available to our students outside our worship gatherings. Short of pirating music or doing something illegal this is one of the best ways we’ve come up with.
Set aside about 10-12 minutes and watch these 2 videos. The first one is the story behind the song, and the 2nd is the performance that is on the new Hillsong album.
This is my personal blog. Most of what is written is my opinion, observation, original thought, or things I find interesting somewhere else. While I am employed by Mt. Paran North, the things expressed here are not endorsed or necessarily accepted by Mt. Paran North or it's leadership. So don't go sue the church because you don't agree with something I write. Just post a comment and tell me I'm an idiot. It'll just be better for all of us.
