Evolving Technologies

I ran across an interesting article in the Washington Post that can be read HERE. The link came from THIS GUY. The premise of the article is that the RIAA is now suing an Arizona man for taking music he purchased legally and copying it onto his own computer. They aren’t arguing that he illegally shared it. They say that is in violation of copyright laws by making a copy of that music. A great quote from the article…

As technologies evolve, old media companies tend not to be the source of the innovation that allows them to survive. Even so, new technologies don’t usually kill off old media: That’s the good news for the recording industry, as for the TV, movie, newspaper and magazine businesses. But for those old media to survive, they must adapt, finding new business models and new, compelling content to offer.

The RIAA’s legal crusade against its customers is a classic example of an old media company clinging to a business model that has collapsed.

Is there any truth in there for the church? Are there methods that were successful in years gone by in reaching people with the Gospel that need to be adapted, tweaked, or completely thrown out in order to present the “compelling content” that we offer? The encouraging news (I guess) is that “new technologies (methods) don’t usually kill off old media (methods)”. This speaks to the fact that all kinds of churches can be successful. There are some who want to change all churches to look like the newer church models.

Fantasy Football and Wii

Attention Mt. Paran Northers: If you see Josh Wright, James Reeves, Chris Lohmann, Andrew Simmons, Travis McCarn, Jim Turner and the other managers in the PlayYourWay Fantasy Football League, please console them. I beat Lohman in the Championship Sunday after coming into the playoffs as the 6 seed. Next year will be fun with the Keeper League.

Also, because I’m smarter than the average bear I put a Wii on Branson’s (10 months old) Christmas list. Wouldn’t you know it? He got one. He’s going to let me play it until he can actually walk and stuff. If I don’t answer my cell phone, that’s why.

What I learned at the Mall

I went with Corrie and the boys to the mall the Monday night before Christmas to “help” her finish up Christmas shopping.  While we were in the food court I watched families come in split up get their own food and meet back at a table to eat.  I can’t say much, we did it too.  Corrie had Chinese, Cooper had Sbarro’s Pizza, and I had Taco Bell.  I think this is what a healthy church looks like.  It provides a gathering place for families to be fed…together.  However, each member of the family is able to find something that is suitable or appealing to them.

Beginning this week these commercials will air on MTV and other channels as a part of a 4 week advertising campaign. They focus on the 10 commandments.  These are pretty original.
